Absztrakt: A szerző bevezetője szerint Richard Lewontin molekuláris biológusnak a New York Review of Books hasábjain a közelmúltban (2004. november 18-án) megjelent cikke nagyon jól összefoglalja azokat a kérdéseket, amelyeket a Tokiói Egyetemen 2006 októberében az információs tudományokról tartott előadásában fel kívánt tenni a tudás és a demokrácia közötti kapcsolatokról, a következőkben: „A racionális politikai gondolkodáshoz szükséges tudás, ami valaha elérhető volt a tömegek számára, ma egy különlegesen képzett elit tagjainak a birtokában van, és ez a helyzet feszültséget és ellentmondásokat okoz a képviseleti demokrácia működésében”. Absztrakt: In the introduction of this paper, the author summarizes the set of questions he wanted to raise about the linkage between knowledge and democracy in his lecture delivered at the Tokyo University for Information Sciences in October 2006 by quoting a recent review in the New York Review of Books (November 18, 2004), in which the molecular biologist Richard Lewontin maintains that "the knowledge required for political rationality, once available to the masses, is now in the possession of a specially educated elite, a situation that creates a series of tensions and contradictions in the operation of representative democracy".
