Absztrakt: The aim of this study was to collect and analyse data about the prior knowledge that freshmen at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, have about basic concepts in computer and information literacy. The results can be used for a better adaptation of teaching to take into account the knowledge that students have accumulated during their primary and secondary education. The study relied on an anonymous testing of respondents’ knowledge. The questions encompassed two base ECDL modules: the essentials of computer and Internet use. The test was completed by more than 500 students from 13 departments at the Faculty of Philosophy, one group from the Faculty of Management and one group from the Faculty of Technical Sciences. This paper analyses the students’ answers to the questions regarding their knowledge of Internet services and tools. The results reveal significant deficiencies in their knowledge in this area.
